How to Format a Memory Card on a Computer
- Insert the memory card into your computer’s card reader. If your computer does not have a built-in card reader, use an external one connected via USB.
- Open File Explorer (Windows) or Finder (Mac) and locate the memory card. It should appear as a removable disk.
- Right-click the memory card and select “Format” (Windows) or “Erase” (Mac). Alternatively, select the card and click the “Format” (Windows) or “Erase” (Mac) button in the toolbar.
- Choose a file system format for the memory card:
- FAT32 — Recommended for cards 32GB or smaller. Compatible with most devices, but limited to a maximum file size of 4GB.
- exFAT — Recommended for cards larger than 32GB. Supports larger file sizes but may not be compatible with all devices. (Optional) You can also name your SD card here.
- Click “Start” (Windows) or “Erase” (Mac) to begin formatting. This will erase all data on the card, so make sure important files are backed up beforehand.
- Wait for the process to finish. This may take a few minutes depending on the size of the card.
- Safely eject the memory card from your computer and remove it from the card reader.
